Out and About this month

Some of our riders have been competing recently, and we’d like to recognise their efforts … not just those who placed, but also those who have been out to extend their experience, or who did well in a competitive class.

I have received the following results that were too late for the last newsletter. Late but no less important:

Georgia Goss achieved a 2nd in Combined Training and a 1st in Dressage.

Natalie Scott came 3rd in Dressage at the Doongala Dressage and Combined Training day.

Amy Moore obtained a 3rd in the Combined Training.

Maddie Scott came 6th in the Combined Training at the same event.

Maddie also competed at her first trials at the Lilydale Horse Trials and although she didn’t place, she rode very well.

Sara-Jane Vaughn came 5th at Lilydale Pony Club ODE.

Results for the Lilydale Show:

Elissa Robbins and Amy Tucker both placed in showjumping (sorry, Elissa, we don't have exact details of your results to be able to post).

Amy achieved 3rd in 75cm SJ, and also 1 x 1st and 4 x 4th places in other categories.

Tessa Whitford

Reserve Champion PC Mount,  1st PC Mount, 1st Ridden Pony 13.2hh -14hh open, 1st PC Turnout, 1st PC Led, 3rd Ridden Pony, Open, Owner Rider  4th Led APSB pony

Jackie Wright
Champion PC Mount and Reserve Champion PC Rider, 1st Pleasure Mount, 1st PC rider, 1st PC Mount, 2nd Open Rider, 3rd Local Rider, 3rd PC Led.

The weather capped off the day, and it was fantastic to hear the comments around the place about Mooroolbark Pony Club riders doing so well.

This is an amazing result for our girls and the Pony Club in general.

Well done to all of you

December (Christmas) Rally

Greetings all

Next month is our Xmas rally and it is a little different from usual. We will be having a bit of everything and it should be great fun!
In the morning we will start with Pairs Showjumping, Pairs Dressage and Handimount. We need to allocate times for this so can everybody please check in at the club rooms between 8.30 and 8.45 to sort out a time slot. Gear check is at 9am.
Unlike normal rallies we will not have instructors running classes. Instead Nicki and Kate will be judging the dressage and  showjumping. So it's a bit like being at a competition where its up to you to get yourselves where you need to be, to warm up for your event and to behave responsibly and appropriately in between. This includes only moving around at a walk outside of the warm up ring and showing consideration to other riders.

Pairs Dressage

For those who haven’t tried it before, pairs dressage is really good fun.  Riders of all standards can have a go.  Ideally you should find  a partner and practice with him or her, but if you can’t get your horses together, talk on the phone and decide on a test with your partner.  You both need to learn the test and then have a little practice on the day in the warm up area and then have a go.  Christmas rally is about having fun.  It doesn’t matter if your test is not perfect.

Grade 4 and 5 Riders

See the link below for two simple pairs tests suitable for Gr 5 and 4 standard riders.  You may like to add music and a costume.  You can have a go at writing your own test or adding a little more to one of these tests if you like.  If you do this you need to bring a typed copy for the judge – see Gr 3 instructions below.

Grade 3 and above

Riders at Gr 3 and above should have a go at writing one for themselves.  They might like to include more complicated movements like canter side by side, lengthened trot strides etc.  If writing their own test they need to bring a typed up copy for the judge with a space for comments and marks for each movement.  To type up, start with an existing test and modify the document as this is easiest. A test you make up yourself still has compulsory movements.

We need to see;

-Medium walk.

-Free walk

-Trot circle on both reins.

-Working canter  on both reins

-Halt at beginning and end.

You can ride in mirror image, side by side or a mixture of both.

Riders may like to add music and a costume.  At this level the judge would expect the movements to reflect the music, at least to some extent.

If you are wearing a costume, make sure you practice in it at least once, to let the horses get used to it and to make sure nothing falls off.  If you can, practice in your costume in pairs, because even though the horse can’t really see the costume of his own rider, he can see the costume of the other rider and needs to get used to it.

Fancy Dress
We will also have a fancy dress parade in the lunch hour. This is so you can let your imaginations run wild with an "out there" costume or give your pairs dressage one another outing. Just remember to be safety conscious, you still need to wear a riding hat and boots and avoid using anything that could cause an entanglement hazard.

Games

In the afternoon we will run a variety of games.

We will be needing a few parents to help the day run. Also if any members are coming unmounted we have plenty for you to do!

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE

Call or email to tell me (Lindy - DC) if you are not coming to rally.

Chelsea "out and about"

Out & About - September

Wendy Wright, Tuesday, 23 September 2008

Our riders out and about this month …

Some of our riders have been competing recently, and we’d like to recognise their efforts … not just those who placed, but also those who have been out to extend their experience, or who did well in a competitive class.

Tessa Whitfort competed with Andy at Eltham in Grade 4 and came 5th and 7th. At the APSB Acton Pony Day she placed 6th in Dressage, 3rd in Handimount, 4th in Combined Training, and for Working Hunter she placed 1st in Open and 2nd in AA56.

In August Alexandra Brooks competed in Grade 5 at the Glenbrae Interschool Dressage Competition and placed 4th in test 5C and 2nd in 5B.

Also at Glenbrae, Jackie Wright riding Morocco placed 2nd for test 3c and 5th for 3D.

We had a number of riders compete with their schools at the Yarra Valley Grammar Horse Trials at Lilydale Pony Club in early September. Ashleigh Fleming and Amy Tucker competed in Grade 4 at Lilydale, with Ashleigh placing 3rd and Amy around mid-field in a very competitive class.  Jackie Wright rode Jinx in his first competition and placed 3rd in grade 5. The girls were all in the same team from Mt Lilydale, and their team came in 6th

Chelsea Winter had a great month - at the EFA Combined Training Day at Werribee, she placed 3rd in Intro & at the Monash Pony Club Show Jumping Day she placed 1st in C Grade. At the Melbourne Hunt Club, Hunter Show she received received 3 x 1st places, 3 x 2nd places, and 2 Reserve Champion places in the Clyde X Class. And at the Yarrambat Horse Trials she placed 1st in C Grade. Fantastic effort!

If anyone has photos from their events, please send them through to Wendy or Tania.

YERINGBERG RESULTS

(Photos are available for purchase from the link at the bottom of this screen)

It was a cold and windy day at Yeringberg last weekend, but at least it didn’t rain.  For Jackie, Amy, Sarah-Jane and Hayley C, it was an early start and we all arrived in the dark but our other riders, Josie, Justine, Chelsea, Elissa, Kate, Hayley H, Tessa and Elisha were lucky to have later dressage times.

Ground conditions were near perfect, soft and only a little slippery.  The cross country course was magnificent, if a little daunting in places.

There’s no question that the cross country was the toughest phase at this competition.  Around a fifth of the competitors were eliminated on the cross country and as a result, more than half the teams.  Our girls were no exception, with a very colourful first jump, scary ditches and drops into water presenting difficulties for many of our riders.  All of our teams except the Mooroolbark A team and Jackie’s composite team with Nunawading were eliminated on the Cross Country.  For those girls it was a long wait in the cold and eventually, the dark for final results.  In the end, Jackie’s team placed 9th in the Weber Shield and the Mooroolbark A team, much to their surprise and in the closest possible finish with a difference of only 0.1 in the scores, came 1st in the Lawlor Shield.

Mooroolbark has had a couple of second and third placings in this competition since we joined the North Metro Zone.  It was very satisfying to finally crack the big one.  Congratulations all.

Individual results for our club competitors are as follows (see below for link to full set of results)

Gr 3     Justine Russell               13th in dressage            E overall           Team result E

For a number of our riders, this was the first external Horse Trials competition for either horse or rider or both.  All the riders and horses were turned out beautifully and  we are very proud of all their performances.

Thankyou to our parents who acted as jump judges, Michelle Winter, Jeanette Catlee and Fiona Vaughan and to Lindy Whitfort and Kate Wilson who organized teams and training.  And last but never least, to Jim and the Zone for running the day.
